Samsung will include real-time translation in a future smartphone model. A company spokesperson told AFP on Friday that South Korean smartphone giant Samsung Electronics will provide a real-time translation service on calls using AI technology next year.

According to market tracker Counterpoint, Samsung is the world’s leading smartphone manufacturer, accounting for one-fifth of global sales between July and September, while Apple comes in second with 16% of the market. According to the official, the new real-time translation feature will be included in Samsung’s new Galaxy flagship model, which will be released early next year.

It would enable “real-time translation in audio and text as callers are on the line,” according to the representative, who added that the number of languages supported has not yet been established. Because the new model will use “on-device AI technology,” translation will be available even if a call partner is using a non-Samsung smartphone.

Speaking to a foreigner using the new AI tool will be “as simple as turning on closed captions” on streaming shows, according to a press release from Samsung, with private conversations securely stored on the phones.

The announcement comes as the South Korean corporation races to build their generative AI model called Samsung Gauss, which comes in three flavours: language, code, and image and is presently used by corporate employees.

The AI system would be integrated into the company’s wide variety of products in the near future, it stated, without defining the timeline or the models.
